Almost everyone dreams of travelling the Sunshine State: the sun on your face, the light wind breeze, your favourite songs at full volume, passing the most beautiful beaches in the world. Whether you rent a car, motorhome or travel by public transportation, we will show you the best route for your unforgettable Florida road trip!

Florida Road Trip Highlight 1: Miami

We’ll start and end our trip in Miami and there is a lot to discover here. Miami is colourful and full of joie de vivre – and you can see and feel it at every corner of the coastal city: street art, shopping, art deco and of course the endless beaches.

We recommend that you set your alarm a little earlier: Rise and shine, go to the beach – and let the rising sun take your breath away! A boat trip in Biscayne Bay is also one of our must-see beaches in Miami.

Florida Road Trip Highlight 2: The Keys

The Florida Keys are top rated and belong very high up on the list of special and unique places – and should not be missed on any Florida road trip. Over 42 bridges you get from the mainland to Key West and there is a lot to discover:

  • • In Islamorada you can explore the history of diving at the History of Diving Museum.
  • • Visit injured sea turtles at Turtle Hospital in Marathon and learn more about these creatures.
  • • In Key West you’ll find inspiration in Ernest Hemingway’s house and get to know the special cats with their six toes!

Florida Road Trip Highlight 3: Everglades

The Everglades’ marshlands extend over large parts of the state. The present Everglades National Park is one of the largest national parks in the USA, is located in the southernmost tip of Florida and is a popular destination for families.

The Everglades are easiest to explore with by airboat. Inevitably a feeling of discovery mixed with adventure comes up! Be sure to pack mosquito repellent and binoculars to spot the alligators in the wilderness.

Florida Road Trip Highlight 4: Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is still one of the real insider tips in Florida and is only a short drive from Fort Myers in the Gulf of Mexico. There is no city center on Sanibel and everything is done in a cosy manner on the small island – perfect for a few relaxing days away from the bigger cities.

By the way, the beaches on the island are very special indeed: they are among the most colourful and beautiful shell beaches in the world. This guide provides a lot of information about the shells and instructions to identify them.

Florida Road Trip Highlight 5: Orlando

In Orlando dreams become reality: in more than ten different theme parks everyday life stands no chance and brave animation heroes, squeaky movie characters and magical worlds come to life every morning.

If we could move into one of the parks, our favourite would be The Wizarding World of Harry Potter! There you can explore the Diagon Alley, take a ride in the Hogwarts Express and visit the castle, and of course take a lot of exciting roller coaster rides. Have your wands ready!

Fans of Micky Mouse, Goofy and Co. will find their paradise and their favourite characters at Walt Disney World Resort! Four adventure parks and two water parks attract more than 50 million visitors every year.

Florida Road Trip Highlight 6: St. Augustine

You should also plan a detour to the north of Florida! St. Augustine is considered the oldest city in the United States and combines centuries of history with a modern touch. As you stroll through the alleys of the old town, you’ll get a true island feeling: colourful facades, cobblestones and cosy cafes. During the hot summer months, it is easiest to escape the heat in the countless museums. Villa Zorayda is one of the weirdest museums in St. Augustine and is based on the Spanish Alhambra.

Florida Road Trip Highlight 7: Cape Canaveral

In Cape Canaveral there is something for everyone: the waves in Cocoa Beach make the beach one of the hot spots for surfers in Florida and water enthusiasts can kayak or snorkel with river dolphins and manatees.

In the Kennedy Space Center, interested people can put their skills to the test during astronaut training. And maybe even the launch of a space shuttle will take place during your Florida visit! Here you can find current dates and a countdown.
