Experience the attractions of the UNESCO City of Design, the famed warmth and hospitality of the Canadians, and local delicacies such as poutine and maple syrup. We’ve put together the very best tips for your trip to Montréal – and from April 2019 onwards, we’ll be flying you non-stop from Vienna to the second-largest Francophone city on Earth!
What you shouldn’t miss in Montréal
Our favourite place in Montréal is without a doubt the Botanic Garden. Located at the heart of the city, this green space is an oasis of calm and relaxation. It’s one of the largest and most exquisite spots in the world, and home to a wide variety of different gardens and glasshouses. And wherever you go, you’ll see truly unique (and absolutely vast) sculptures created by artists in the green spaces here. Click here for further details of the Botanic Garden.
To explore the Old City district of Montréal, take a stroll through the alleyways and around the Place d’Armes. It’s rarely quiet at Place Jacques-Cartier, because street musicians fill the air with their sounds there. Along the Rue Saint Paul, you’ll find vast numbers of shops and beautiful cafés, and the Promenade, along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, is a must-do on your sightseeing list, especially in the warmer months.
Another highlight in Montréal are the colourful graffiti that grace some of the walls in the city. New works by international artists and top local street artists are added every year, and Montréal even has its own annual Mural Festival. Click here to find out where you can catch the most creative walls of the moment.
The place that originally lent Montréal its name, by the way, is Mount Royal, the impressive peak which rises up at the heart of the city. The park surrounding it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect whose amazing ideas also inspired Central Park in New York. Countless paths lead up onto Mount Royal, and once you reach the top, you’re rewarded by the best views across the city.
Montréal’s also the perfect starting-out point for a legendary road-trip through the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, when you should definitely schedule in stops in Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto and at Niagara Falls.
Where to eat and dine in Montréal
At lunchtime (or just to keep you going until then), you should definitely try the Montréal Bagel. This version has a bigger hole and tastes sweeter, than its better-known cousin, the New York Bagel. This local speciality tastes particularly good at Bagel Etc., Fairmount Bagel and St. Viateur Bagel.
Have you ever tried poutine? The local delicacy in Quebec Province, this is a high-calorie dish consisting of French fries with small pieces of cheese and gravy. Click here to find the best poutine restaurants in Montréal.

OMG!! Once again, Canada showing us how far ahead of the poutine game they are at: Fries with melted cheese curds and beer gravy 😍🍟🤤 Here is a business idea: after party poutine and beer food truck? Who’s in? . . . . #andreasculinarypassport . . #andreasculinarypassporttoronto #poutine #friesbeforeguys #ohcanada #🍟 #yas #drunkfood
Curious is also the concept of Juliette & Chocolat. Those of you with a sweet tooth will find what you’re looking for here – because at these restaurants, desserts are served which are more like the size of main courses. Mmmmm!
